Founded in 1968 by Ione Dorrington and former part-time students of the Embroidery Department of Goldsmiths School of Art.

Constance Howard was the Group’s first president.

New Embroidery Group is run by a voluntary committee elected by the membership at the annual general meeting.

The Group welcomes new members, both beginners and experienced embroiderers who are interested in promoting a high standard of design and embroidery. Selection of submitted work for the biennial exhibitions is made by a committee composed of two members and one independent selector.

Members have the opportunity each year to meet socially at the summer garden party. Group visits are organised to museums, often to see archive collections. A twice-yearly meeting and lecture is held on a Friday at The Art Workers’ Guild, Queen Square, London. A further vital link for the Group is the quarterly newsletter which includes articles contributed by members.
